A Romford man is gearing up to cycle 100 miles to raise cash for his favourite local social care charity.

Senior site manager Darren Hegarty, will be taking on the gruelling challenge of the Prudential Ride, riding from London to Surrey.

Darren, aged 40, will be fundraising for social charity Vibrance, where his mother, Kathleen, has worked as a project worker for over six years.

Ilford based charity, Vibrance, supports 400 people in traditional services throughout London and the South East with learning disabilities and mental health issues, offering a range of community day services, low-support housing, nursing and care homes, short breaks, supported employment, as well as supporting 1,500 people in self-directed services.

The Prudential Ride will be taking place on Sunday 31st July, starting from the Olympic Park, in Stratford, and finishing along the Mall, via Surrey.

Training for the event started in late February, after Darren had recovered from a knee operation last Christmas. Darren’s training programme has been intense, involving cycling to work daily, and up to 50 miles every weekend.

This will be Darren’s second, and last, Prudential Ride. Darren participated in the event last year, finishing in an impressive time of just under six hours, but as a result of his knee operation will not participate again.

Speaking of why he chose to fundraise for Vibrance, Darren said: “My mom has worked at Vibrance for many years, and in this time I have visited the service she works in and have tried to get involved in as many events as possible. I chose to fundraise for Vibrance because of the fantastic work the charity does, which I get to hear about directly from my mom, which enables people of all ages and abilities to have a greater voice and presence in the community.

“I had originally set a fundraising target of £1,500, but when I got near this target I decided to up it to £2,000. I will keep increasing the target when I get near it!”
