Vibrance signs up to the Living Wage

London Living Wage Employer

Vibrance - a leading social care provider in Essex and the south east that supports vulnerable people with disabilities – has signed up to a campaign to pay staff a fairer living wage.

The social care charity has become a Living Wage employer after putting measures into place to ensure all its staff get paid more than the National Minimum Wage.

The organisation, which employs around 400 people, recently became one of only 850 companies in the UK to be awarded the prestigious Investors in People Silver award for the way it has transformed business performance through the support and motivation of its team.

Vibrance HR Director, Nita Desir-Adeshiyan, said: “The minimum wage in the UK is currently set at £6.31 per hour. By signing up to the Living Wage, it means none of our employees will earn less than £7.65 outside London, or £8.80 if they work within London.

"As an organisation, we just felt this was a right and fitting thing for us to do. It is completely in line with our values and our ethos.

“Traditionally, workers in the health and social care sector have not been paid very well. Many of them are women, and many are the main bread winners for their families. Knowing they could be working very hard in incredibly demanding roles, but could still be struggling to live on the minimum wage, just did not sit well with us.

“We believe that caring as a career has often been undervalued and we hope that this will help to change people’s perceptions. We also believe that by signing up for the Living Wage, it will help Vibrance to attract and retain the best people possible to our organisation,” she added.

Vibrance, which has its head office in Roden Street, Ilford, has been providing essential support since 1989. It offers community day services, low-support housing, nursing and care homes, respite care, supported employment and self-directed services to 850 people in nine local authority areas. It was named in The Sunday Times ‘100 Best Companies To Work For’ in 2012 and 2010.

The Living Wage campaigns for a living wage for all employees of companies within the UK. Accredited employers agree to pay their staff an hourly minimum rate which is set independently and updated annually. The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK.
