LinkMeUp - two years on

It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since we launched LinkMeUp– and how much it has already grown.

The aim was to make it easier for adults and children with disabilities to link up with essential services at the click of a button, whether this is to access activities or recruit a Personal Assistant (PA). We first launched in Bexley, Bromley and the surrounding areas in 2014, as we were receiving up to 20 enquiries a month for people looking to employ a PA.

Recently the National Audit Office (NAO) concluded, in a new report, that the Department of Health’s monitoring of the impact of personalisation in social care is so poor that they can’t draw any firm conclusions regarding the effectiveness of personal budgets. However, our LinkMeUp service is going from strength to strength, indicating the positive impacts of personal budgets and personalisation for our service users.

It was really important for us to make the service user-friendly and fully searchable, as we know that trying to find the right support can be a daunting experience. We designed our PA Register with this in mind, to help people find the perfect match for their needs, including location, availability and experience or interests. To date we have supported 55 people with a disability successfully recruit their perfect PA, and have registered 143 PAs.

We are very excited for the future of LinkMeUp, and after great success in our current locations we are looking to extend the service geographically to meet the growing demand for care and support workers. A specific PA training plan is being developed for a variety of topics, including medical training, which we are hoping to offer our PAs in the near future. We are re-vamping the LinkMeUp website, which will be launched this Spring, to reflect all of our exciting changes – we can’t wait for you to see it!
